He once stood tall,
An alpha above the rest;
Now he's only inches off the ground,
Crawling on his chest.

Another jolt.
His body lurches forward.
The pain of the bullet is small,
Compared to the pain in his heart.

His family
His children
His mate

All dead.

Another violent jolt,
He can no longer crawl.
And nostalgia sets in.

From his chest explodes a final howl,
Filled with love and memory,
Until he is permanently silenced.

I really like the first stanza.
The entire thing almost brought a tear to my eye.

Sometimes insomnia is good for producing things like this.
